The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) detained five individuals in the city of Maputo a few days ago, three of them for drug trafficking and two for corruption.
Of the five, three are South African citizens and two, Traffic Police (PT) agents.
According to SERNIC spokesman Hilário Lole, the three foreigners were found to be in possession of 43kg of heroin when they were stopped by two Traffic Police agents in Maputo’s Costa do Sol early on Thursday morning.
The two Traffic Police agents were reportedly arrested in the act of demanding a R50,000 bribe to “turn a blind eye” to the drugs.
Lole noted that several false documents used to commit various crimes were also seized.
An investigation is currently underway to shed more light on this and other crimes.
The South African detainees deny any wrongdoing, insisting that they know nothing about the drugs.
The detained police officers also deny any involvement. “Was it me who brought them in?” one of the now-detained Traffic Police agents asked.
