Fishing has been banned in lakes Chiúta, Chirua and Amaramba in Niassa province due to the outbreak of Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS), also known as fish disease.
According to the district director of economic activities in Mecanhelas, Armando Maulana, samples have already been collected and sent to Maputo for laboratory analyses.
In the case of aquaculture, EUS can kill 100% of stocks if the fish cultivated are among the 100 species susceptible.
It was discovered in Japan in 1971 and has been identified in various parts of the world, including the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region.
Its presence in Mozambique was confirmed in 2021 from samples taken from fish in the wild in the central province of Manica.
“Although it is a disease that cannot be transmitted to humans, it is advisable, however, to cook fish from endemic areas well, with or without red spots,” the government recommends.
