The Mozambican health authorities have diagnosed the first case of the disease mpox (formerly known as monkey pox) in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, which means that the country currently has 74 confirmed cases of the disease.
According to the daily update bulletin on M-pox, issued by the National Public Health Directorate, the case was recorded last Wednesday.
Of the 74 confirmed cases, 66 are in northern Niassa province, three in the central province of Manica, four in Maputo province, and one in Cabo Delgado. Currently, 36 positive cases are under clinical monitoring.
At the same time, 40 new suspected cases emerged, distributed as follows: 12 in Niassa, five in Maputo city, 15 in Maputo province, three in Nampula, one in Cabo Delgado, and one in Gaza. All are awaiting laboratory confirmation.
According to the document, 25 tests were conducted, four of which returned positive results, all in Lago district, in Niassa.
The document also indicates that no new contacts were traced, leaving the total number since the beginning of this phase of the outbreak at 273.
Since July, 881 samples have been analysed, and 111 suspected cases are currently being monitored. To date, there have been no recorded deaths associated with the disease, while 32 people have made a full recovery. Niassa, which was the first province to record positive cases, remains the most affected province, with 44 accumulated cases.
In order to avoid further cases of mpox transmission, the Health Ministry urges people to avoid physical contact with infected patients or those with suspected symptoms, to wash their hands frequently, and not to share personal items such as clothes or towels.
