Mozambique: First batch of vaccines to arrive from China in the coming days – Noticias

Mozambique will, in the next few days, receive doses of Covid-19 vaccine from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, to be used for the immunisation of health professionals on the front line of combating the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘Noticias’ reports.

However, the 2.4 million vaccine doses to be made available through the COVAX mechanism, co-managed by the Global Vaccine Alliance (GAVI), will only arrive in May, contrary to initial forecasts of it arriving this month.

Deputy National Director of Public Health Benigna Matsinhe said on Monday that the vaccine from China will be administered to health professionals working in the areas of prevention, diagnosis and medical care for patients with Covid-19, and from there on the country will give priority to other risk groups such as police and military officers.

Matsinhe said that the Ministry of Health is in the process of preparing a National Vaccination Plan, and is evaluating the approval and acquisition of vaccines from Sinovac, Johnson & Johnson and Oxford-AstraZeneca.

Asked whether vaccination will be mandatory, Matsinhe said that health is both a right and a duty. Professionals in the health sector, she added, are aware of the importance of immunisation for disease prevention and risk reduction. However, she announced, the Ministry of Health had decided that the vaccination process will be voluntary, and no one will be forced to take the vaccine.

Matsinhe also said that improvements in the mechanisms of epidemiological surveillance in health units and the expansion of testing capacity could have had an effect on the registration of more positive cases in the districts.

She pointed out that concern about the performance of the immune system was growing in line with the outbreak of the pandemic and the rise in the number of cases in the country.

“An adequate immune system is an important factor in protecting against viral infections, including Covid-19. To strengthen the immune system, you must start by eating a balanced and varied diet, based on natural and fresh foods,” she said.

Covid-19 meanwhile continues to claim victims. Between Sunday and Monday, the health authorities recorded four more deaths, bringing the Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 599.

The number of hospitalised patients rose to 222 on Monday, with the admission of 24 new patients, while 22 patients were discharged to continue their treatment at home. The registration of 517 new infections, also reported on Monday, raises the cumulative total to 56,160 active cases.

Mozambique had by Monday registered 19,333 cases of the novel coronavirus, 11,496 of them in Maputo city.

Vacinas contra Covid-19 chegam nos próximos dias

Moçambique vai receber, nos próximos dias, doses de vacina da farmacêutica chinesa Sinovac para a imunização dos profissionais de saúde na linha da frente de combate à pandemia da Covid-19, por estes constituírem o grupo de risco.

Entretanto, as 2.4 milhões de doses a serem disponibilizadas através do mecanismo COVAX, co-gerido pela Aliança Global de Vacinas (GAVI), só chegarão ao país em Maio, contrariando as previsões iniciais que apontavam para estes mês.

A directora-nacional adjunta de Saúde Pública, Benigna Matsinhe, avançou que a vacina proveniente da China será administrada aos profissionais de saúde que actuam nas áreas de prevenção, diagnóstico e assistência médica a pacientes com Covid-19, podendo ainda abranger outros grupos de risco como os agentes da Polícia e militares.

Acrescentou que o Ministério da Saúde está em processo de elaboração do Plano Nacional de Vacinação, estando a avaliar a aprovação e aquisição das vacinas da Sinovac, Johnson e Johnson, Oxford e Astrazeneca.

Questionada sobre a obrigatoriedade da toma da vacina, Matsinhe recordou que a saúde é um direito e dever dos cidadãos, para além de que os profissionais do sector têm consciência da importância da imunização para a prevenção das doenças e redução do risco.

Apontou para melhorias nos mecanismos de vigilância epidemiológica nas unidades sanitárias e expansão da capacidade de testagem, com impacto no registo de cada vez mais casos positivos nos distritos.

Assinalou que, com a eclosão da pandemia e o alastramento do número de casos no país, cresce a preocupação em relação ao desempenho do sistema imunológico na saúde.

“Um sistema imunológico adequado é factor importante para proteger contra infecções virais, incluindo a Covid-19. Para o fortalecimento do sistema imunológico, deve-se começar por fazer uma alimentação equilibrada e variada, baseada em alimentos naturais e frescos”, afirmou.

Enquanto isso, a Covid-19 continua a fazer vítimas no país. As autoridades sanitárias registaram, entre domingo e ontem, maisquatro óbitos devido à doença, elevando assim para 599 o total de vítimas mortais provocadas pela doença desde a sua eclosão em Março do ano passado.

O número de pacientes internados subiu ontem para 222, com a admissão de 24novos doentes nas unidades sanitárias. No sentido inverso, 22 doentes, que se encontravam em isolamento institucional, receberam alta, devendo prosseguir com o tratamento em ambiente domiciliar.

Foi igualmente anunciado o registo de 517 novas infecções, elevando, deste modo, para 56.160o cumulativo de casos positivos.
