The first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine acquired by the government through the Covax initiative arrived in the country this Monday morning.
Covax is an international mechanism that aims to accelerate equitable access to appropriate, safe and effective vaccines for low-income countries.
According to a press release from the prime minister’s press office, the first batch consists of 384,000 doses. The document does not give the name of the vaccine.
Under the Covax program, Mozambique will receive a total of 12,332,897 doses, sufficient to immunise 20% of the country’s 6,166,449 population.

Mozambique also this Monday morning was to receive 100,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine, manufactured by the Pharmaceutical Serum Institute of India – a donation from the Indian government. The Ministry of Health note does not provide details about the vaccine, although it is known that it was developed by the University of Oxford in partnership with the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical firm.
This Monday’s arrivals bring the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses already available in the country to 684,000.
On February 24, Mozambique received, as a donation from the Chinese government, 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, which has an efficiency of 79.3%.
The National Vaccination Plan, which started nation-wide this Monday with health officials, foresees immunising altogether close to 17 million Mozambicans (54.6% of the population).
