Seven people were killed and five seriously injured in a fire that broke out at dawn on Tuesday in Mualazi, Chifunde district, Tete province.
According to Ana Jagaje, Provincial Commander of the PRM in Tete, the victims were gold miners, said to have been asphyxiated while sleeping in their huts.
One hypothesis is that the dormitories caught fire after the victims failed to extinguish a fire they had lit for warmth.
“We learned about the tragedy from our colleagues in Chifunde district. The prospectors built a fire during the night. After they had warmed up, they took it that the fire was extinguished. They then went to bed, and were surprised in their sleep when the huts caught fire,” Ana Jange said.
Jange said family members were being sought to identify the bodies, while the injured were taken to a hospital in neighbouring Malawi, on account of the region’s proximity to that country.
