The sugar factory in Marromeu, in Sofala province, is currently at a standstill following a fire which broke out last Thursday inside the complex.
The fire reached the manufacturing unit control room and destroyed almost all the computer equipment installed there. It took 30 minutes to control the flames, thankfully without any injury to personnel being suffered.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it is assumed to have been a short circuit.
Speaking by telephone to Radio Mozambique, Companhia de Sena Tereos CEO Luc Burton said that it was premature to estimate the cost of the damage, stressing that investigations into the damages and cause were still underway.
He made it clear, however, that the situation was serious, and that it was not known when the factory would be able to resume operations.
Employing nearly 4,600 workers, the sugar factory in Marromeu produced 52,000 tons of sugar annually.
