A large fire has hit three Adil Stores warehouses located in Beira city’s Maquinino neighbourhood. The warehouses – of which there are six – contain construction material.
The fire started at around 3:00 a.m. this Wednesday (14-02), Miramar reports, and quickly spread from the ground floor to the first floor, with the highly flammable materials inside contributing to the speedy spread of the flames.
According to Miramar, firefighters were called to the scene, but faced difficulties due to a lack of fuel. The owner of the warehouses had to pay for fuel to supply the single vehicle and the fire-fighting pumps. O País reports that, and around eight hours later the fire had still not been extinguished.
At around 7:00 a.m., other fire-fighting teams arrived to provide support, but the flames continued to gain strength, spreading to other warehouses.
There is still no data on the origin of the fire, nor are there any known injuries.
The owner of the warehouses told Miramar that he recently won a 130-million meticais (around US$2 million, at current exchange rates] tender promoted by the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office to acquire materials for post-cyclone reconstruction. Unfortunately, this is the material inside the warehouses affected by the fire.
