A massive fire, which broke out on Thursday afternoon, reduced the South African-owned East African Safaris Lodge in Chizavane, Mandlakazi district, Gaza, to ashes, leaving 60 employees at risk of losing their jobs.
The company’s human resources manager, Vasco Cumbe, said that there were no casualties, with all guests having been evacuated to safety, but stressed that the material and financial losses were substantial.
All 60 permanent employees and some seasonal employees who would be hired for the upcoming peak summer season were now without jobs, Cumbe said.
The company was working with its insurance company to determine the full extent of the damage and the next steps, he added.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is suspected to have been started during charcoal production. Flames from a charcoal kiln spread to a grocery store and then a sculpture gallery before, now out of control, finally reaching the resort and consuming the reception, clinic, laundry, shop, bar, main restaurant and several guest rooms.
