A fire broke out around 23:00 hours on Sunday, December 5, partially destroying the building housing the Provincial Migration Services [SENAM] in the city of Nampula, and devouring documents and furniture there.
The fire destroyed the director’s office and the general bureau, while rapid intervention by firefighters prevented it spreading to other rooms.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, December 6, Migration Services spokesman Frederico Eduardo said that the cause of the fire were still unknown, there being as yet no evidence as to whether it was accidental or intentional in origin.
“An investigation is ongoing, and we will soon be giving more details to the media,” he said.
Asked by the Noticias reporter whether at the time of the fire anyone was on a duty in the mission, the source would only say that everything was being investigated, and that nothing further could be advanced at the time.
The Services were closed to clients on Monday, Eduardo explaining that the place was in any condition to accept visitors, but that rehabilitation was taking place, while unable to advance any date for the likely normalization of affairs.
It may be presumed that much documentation of capital importance was devoured by the fire in the director’s office.
