Part of Maputo Central Hospital’s non-current clinical archive was destroyed by a large fire that started around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday (May 2).
The fire consumed patients’ clinical files and other paper work. A preliminary assessment suggests the destruction of about 500,000 clinical histories.
The fire brigade was called and had brought the situation under control by 8:30 a.m., succeeding in preventing the flames reach other nearby hospital services such as Pathological Anatomy.
The fire was of considerable size and took three fire engines to bring under control. Evidence of the damage wrought is extensive, but fortunately the fire did not claim any lives.
A commission of inquiry into the cause of the fire has already been established.
