Authorities in the city of Tete had to call for support from private-company fire brigades from mining company Vale Moçambique and Mozambique Airports to help tackle a blaze at a supermarket in the city on Saturday.
The incident came as a complete surprise, the fury of the flames consuming almost the entire establishment and leaving citizens lamenting the inadequacy of the municipality’s firefighting capacity.
Speaking on site, the PRM Provincial Commander reported that, in addition to their selfless efforts to quell the flames, the corporation rescued a minor from inside the establishment.
SENSAP said it is was premature to speculate on the cause of the fire, but promised to comment in due course.
Supermercado VIP was one of the largest suppliers of miscellaneous products in the city, and the incident comes just a few shopping days before the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
