Mozambique's Minister of Health says that health sector medical assistance capacity is
reduced as a result of a fire that destroyed the Medicines Supply Centre warehouse in
Maputo during the post-election demonstrations.
The fire destroyed medical equipment, supplies and more than twenty vehicles, with the sector losing more than 500 million meticais as a result of vandalisation and looting at the
warehouse.
Minister Ussene Isse made these statements was speaking to the press during a visit to the
warehouse in Maputo.
"We will have to invest again here and we could do other things to improve the health of
our population," he said. "The process of importing medical supplies takes around eighteen months to reach the country. So, can you imagine eighteen months of working with minimal resources to be able to serve our population? I want to take this moment to ask the
population to be very patient, because eventually a health unit may find itself in need of this or that consumable and it may not be available. A lot of material was destroyed."
