Finland’s ministry of foreign affairs has donated €200,000 to a field hospital that is being currently set up in Mozambique by the Finnish Red Cross, as announced by the government on Wednesday.
“The chartered plane and humanitarian workers arrived in Mozambique over the weekend.
The field hospital, managed by the Finnish and Canadian Red Cross, is operating in an area with approximately 300,000 inhabitants,” according to the statement released on Wednesday in Helsinki.
“Cyclone Idai, in terms of destruction and impact, was the worst ever seen on the African continent,” the government said, adding that “the emergency aid plan includes preparing for a crisis and the decision to support Mozambique was taken in a matter of hours after receiving the international aid request.”
The announcement of the financing line arose about three weeks after Mozambique was hit by Cyclone Idai, which killed at least 598 people and injured 1,641, and affected a total of 1.3 million people in the central region, according to the latest tally by Mozambican authorities.
