President Nyusi yesterday launched “Legacy: Organising Ourselves in Defence of the Homeland”[ “Legado: organizando-nos em defesa da Pátria’], a work in six chapters detailing the accomplishments of Mozambique’s defence sector while Filipe Nyusi was Minister of Defence, from 2008 to 2014.
”Our hope is that this work be read in an evolutionary way, in each phase, so that it does not become a dogma or maladjusted to the challenges of the moment. This is not a recipe for solving today’s problems. It is rather a basis to inspire ourselves while solving the problems of the National Defence sector,” the President highlights.
Among the problems the defence sector is currently facing is terrorism in Cabo Delgado, a topic which has gained even greater prominence at national and international level recently. There are also attacks in the centre of the country.
For Filipe Nyusi, the work is “an attempt to better guide those who operationalise the mission of defending the homeland”.
And Filipe Nyusi thanks former president Armando Guebuza for appointing him Minister of Defence.
“We intend to continue to make our contribution to a society that deserves, needs [it], and in particular to the Armed Forces of Defence of Mozambique. So I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, the former President of the Republic of Mozambique, Armando Emílio Guebuza, who invited me and encouraged me to accept the opportunity to make my contribution at the head of the Ministry of National Defence,” Filipe Nyusi says.
It was left to former minister of the Sea, Interior Waters and Fisheries, Agostinho Mondlane, to present the book and congratulate the Mozambican statesman on his courage. In his address, Mondlane argues that the volume will be instrumental in transforming thinking around security in Mozambique.
“We hope that many more Mozambicans will be encouraged to write about this theme,” Agostinho Mondlane told the government officials, leaders of state institutions and members of Frelimo attending the launch.
