Mozambican President Daniel Chapo declared on Monday that the fight against terrorism “remains our top priority”.
Speaking during a visit to the base of the militia known as the “Local Forces”, in Mueda district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Chapo stressed their role in defending the population and the country’s sovereignty from terrorist attacks.
According to a release from Chapo’s office, his visit to the base was part of the commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the massacre of unarmed protestors by Portuguese colonial troops on 16 June 1960. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the conditions of the troops fighting in Cabo Delgado (referred to as the “Northern Operational Theatre”).
Chapo stressed that the involvement of the local population and cooperation with the foreign forces supporting Mozambique (from Rwanda and Tanzania) has been crucial in blocking the advance of the terrorist groups.
He told the Rwandans and Tanzanians “were it not for your work in supporting the Mozambican armed forces, it would not be easy to fight against terrorism”.
“We do not forget the Local Force”, he added. “And we shall never forget you”.
Chapo also visited the 110th Brigade of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) and said “we have followed the work you have done 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We know that you are on the ground defending our fatherland against terrorism”.
He promised better infrastructures and logistical resources for the troops. “We shall continue working to improve conditions in all areas”, he said, “in terms of access roads and of logistics”.
Chapo promised to step up his visits to military positions, in order to boost the morale of the troops. “You can count on us”, he said. “We are with you”.
