Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) last Saturday (16/11) killed eight young men, allegedly members of the group or groups which, since October 2017, have been terrorising parts of northern Cabo Delgado province, ‘Carta de Moçambqiue’ reports.
According to Carta sources, the youths were “executed” after being publicly presented at the Mucojo Administrative Post, Macomia district, as members of that group. ‘Carta’ sources however say that the alleged insurgents carried neither weapons nor machetes, instruments usually employed by the group, during their presentation.
The FDS said the eight youths were detained while attempting to assault FDS positions near Cogolo village, Macomia Administrative Post. ‘Carta’ sources say that some died from mistreatment, while others were executed.
‘Carta’ reports that some sources say the murdered youths were not part of any group other than the Cogolo village community, where they lived. According to them, the eight youths fell into FDS hands as they were returning from the nearby village of Ingoane, where they had gone to see the damage caused by the insurgents the day before.
The sources claim that, after their capture, the FDS sought the advice of the District Secretary, who confirmed that the eight youths lived in the village, but the FDS did not believe him, and took them to the Mucojo Administrative Post headquarters village, where they reportedly mistreated and killed them.
