The Defence and Security Forces (FDS) are tightening the siege for the rapid neutralisation of Mariano Nhongo, leader of the Renamo Military Junta, according to the National Defence Minister, Jaime Neto, promising to present the results of this operation soon.
Speaking yesterday to journalists at Heroes Square, in Maputo, in celebration of 3 February, the minister explained that the main objective of the FDS is to bring Mariano Nhongo by the hand.
“We are doing everything to neutralise Mariano Nhongo, whether by capture or other means. What we can do we will do,” Jaime Neto assured, blaming Nhongo for the armed attacks that are taking place at some locations in Manica and Sofala provinces.
Being a national citizen, Mariano Nhongo will, if he surrenders, be received and will certainly contribute to the country’s development, said the minister.
Asked whether the government had set a deadline for the leader of the Renamo Military Junta to surrender, Jaime Neto replied that it was only a challenge.
“It is a challenge because he is in the bush, on the run, and hiding. It would be a mistake to give a deadline. The truth is that the FDS are on the man’s trail and will continue to work so that soon the results will be publicly presented,” he said.
However, the minister considered the situation in the central region to be worrying, given that the Defence and Security Forces have not yet completely dismantled all the hotspots that threaten the peace and stability of the population and the country.
Regarding the attacks in the north of Cabo Delgado, the minister also assured that there is intense work being carried out by the Defence and Security Forces, saying that it was for this reason that the intensity of terrorist attacks had been reduced for some time.
“We continue with the work of hunting the enemy until total dismantling,” the minister said.
On the same occasion, Jaime Neto called on the young people to distance themselves from any recruitments to swell the ranks of terrorists, urging those who have already joined to leave the group and return to their origins to start their lives again.
The Minister of Defence said that there were conditions for each one [of those those who have already joined the terrorists and now leave] to be received by the local authorities and to be integrated into society, contributing to the development of the country.
