Government entities linked to the agricultural sector in Nampula are satisfied with production levels recorded in the Meconta and Monapo districts, where various food and cash crops are produced with the support of Nacala Logistics.
The satisfaction was expressed by the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Fisheries of Nampula, Ernesto Pacule, during a visit to production facilities in April.
Before the intervention of Nacala Logistics, Pacule said, production levels were below the desired level. Afterwards, communities experienced a new reality. “At least 600 kilos of production per hectare can be extracted from these soils, and this helps families to satisfy their basic needs. Agricultural production is a basic factor in guaranteeing families’ food security,” Pacule said, and “the support of Nacala Logistics has a great impact here”.
Figures indicates a notable growth in production and productivity since the start of the initiative. With the intervention of the Nacala Logistics Income Generation Program, the average productivity of sesame increased from 300 to 750 kilos in three years, representing a growth of about 250%. Average supplies of corn for household consumption rose from five to twelve months, which meant that the program also contributed to food security in the intervention areas.
According to Nacala Logistics Community Relations Manager, Celso Mutadiua, the company supports farmers with technical assistance and agricultural inputs throughout the production cycle. “In addition to providing all technical assistance to producers, we guarantee quality inputs. We are committed to the development of communities and we want to boost family income along the corridor, who are impacted by the Nacala Logistics project,” he said.
Momade Juma, who has been supported by Nacala Logistics for three years, says that the company’s help has improved his quality of life and that of all members of his household. “Until 2015, I had only one child attending school and I wasn’t sure if I could continue to pay for his secondary education. Today, I have two children attending school. I also employ two workers, and have even increased my production area,” Juma enthuses.
Through its Income Generation Program, Nacala Logistics supports approximately 15,000 families living along the corridor. Aware of the impact that the project has on the communities involved, the company renews its commitment to continue to improve the lives of these families.
