Mano Azagaia, Povo no Poder” (“Brother Azagaia, People in Power”) is now a legally registered trademark, owned by the family of Mozambican composer and rapper Edson da Luz known as Azagaia. Among other consequences, this move prohibits anyone from using the brand without the knowledge and authorization of the family.
The information was advanced this week in a press release from the rapper’s family, in which they thanked everyone who directly or indirectly provided support during the funeral of the musician, who died on the 9th of March.
The document also notes that, as a consequence of the family registering the brand, “all matters related to its use, be it concerts or production of materials including posters, t-shirts, caps, pamphlets and any other forms of production or reproduction of associated goods must be authorized by the family”.
“We appeal to all promoters of events and related activities and to those interested in the production and reproduction of articles with the Mano Azagaia brand to approach the family so as to request the respective authorization in writing, with the signature of the brand’s legal guardians,” the family requests.
The “Mano Azagaia, Povo no Poder” brand has become a national meme since the singer died. Hundreds of items, such as t-shirts, hats and posters, have been produced and sold throughout the country in honour of the musician whose lyrics won him widespread admiration and respect, and made him a national hero in the eyes of many.
Azagaia, who died at the age of 38, left a widow and two daughters.
