The Mozambican senior women’s basketball team is out of the Afrobasket-2025 competition after losing 65-58 to Angola on Tuesday in the second and decisive match of the only qualifying round in Zone VI.
Mozambique, who had won the first game 50-44, needed any result other than a defeat by seven or more points, but saw their dream collapse in the final moments of the game.
According to Desafio, the game began with Angola imposing its rhythm in the first quarter, winning 25-12 thanks to aggressive defence and well-coordinated attacks.
In the second quarter, Mozambique reacted with intensity, winning 19-7 and reducing the gap to just one point at half-time.
Balance marked the third quarter, but Angola managed to recover some margin, winning this stage by 21-15. In the last and decisive quarter, the fight was intense and Mozambique tried to stay within the qualifying margin, but the home factor made the difference.
With three seconds to go, the Angolans took advantage and converted a free throw to gain the lead they needed, holding on until the final buzzer at 65-58.
With this result, Mozambique misses out on the biggest continental competition in the sport, while Angola advances to Afrobasket-2025, leaving the Mozambican team to regret the missed opportunity in a game decided on details.
