Mozambique has fallen four positions in the 2021 Global Index on Press Freedom, recently released by Reporters without Borders (RSF), and now stands at 108th in the list of 180 countries.
Mozambique is the lowest of all CPLP countries, with Portugal, in 9th position, the best positioned in the group.
In Africa, Cape Verde is the best-positioned Portuguese-speaking country in the index, while
Namibia is the best-ranked country in the southern region overall, and on the African continent, ranking 24th globally.
Among the factors contributing to the fragility of press freedom in Mozambique, the RSF report highlights difficulties in accessing information in the northern part of the country, the influence on various media of the Frelimo party, as revealed in the 2019 elections, and the expulsion of Tom Bowker, Zitamar News journalist and editor.
