The Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM) have announced that one of the alleged leaders of the terrorists who have menaced the province of Cabo Delgado for five years was shot dead during clashes on Sunday. Thirteen other individuals also died.
The man, identified as Abu Fadila, was shot in Nguida, Macomia district, during clashes that lasted until Tuesday, part of a new military operation called Vulcão IV, which was launched last week, a statement cited by ‘Notícias’ today reveals.
“The Mozambican Armed Defence Forces reaffirm their perennial determination in the fight against terrorist actions in the northern region of Mozambique,” the note adds.
According to the document, two soldiers died and four were injured in operations in Muidumbe and Macomia districts, where incursions believed by local authorities to be the work of rebel groups have been registered recently.
Two of the injured military personnel are known to be out of danger.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Operation Vulcão IV has the assistance of foreign forces supporting Mozambique in the fight against terrorism and aims to “intensify measures to pursue and destroy the terrorist bases of the enemy that terrorizes the north of the Messalo river, Muidumbe district, and the west of Chai, in Macomia district”.
Cabo Delgado province has been facing an armed insurgency for five years with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021 with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts next to gas projects, but new waves of attacks have emerged in the south of the region and in the neighboring province of Nampula.
The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and around 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
