Around 70% of ExxonMobil’s suppliers of goods and services to the Rovuma LNG project will
be Mozambican companies, according to a commitment made yesterday by the multinational exploring natural gas in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, in Cabo Delgado.
The measure aims to promote local content through an anchor industry that will leverage national Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), allowing them to compete on an equal footing with foreign companies. To this end, ExxonMobil met yesterday in Maputo with Mozambican and foreign suppliers, with the aim of publicizing the potential business opportunities arising within the scope of the Rovuma LNG project. Armando Afonso, Director of Public and Government Relations at ExxonMobil Mozambique, explained that promoting local content would enable companies from different sectors to join the oil and gas value chain.
“The oil industry is very demanding and requires technical skills, safety and integrity from the companies that participate in it. Therefore, we believe that, by working together, we can enable national companies to offer security, catering, paving, laundry services, among others, to the required standard,” he stressed.
He also noted that the project was in the study phase, which would culminate in the awarding of the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the plant itself, in Afungi, Palma district.
“We are showing the stage we are at in the project to potential suppliers, both local and international, so that they can better understand the opportunities that will be available in the construction phase. It is important that Mozambican companies understand where we are in terms of the progress of the project,” he explained.
The Business Development Centre (MozUp) has, with the financial support of ExxonMobil, been fulfilling its mission to instruct Mozambican SMEs on technical, financial, work ethics and governance aspects so that they can embrace the business opportunities offered by Rovuma LNG.
