The extension phase of the military register ends tomorrow throughout Mozambique. The present campaign covers young people born in 2003 and all those not over 35 years of age who were unable to register on previous occasions.
The military authorities are taking a positive view of the campaign, despite some constraints at the beginning, such as rains that hindered access to areas in the interior and the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced the observation of certain restrictive measures.
In the meantime, the province of Inhambane had by Friday already enrolled 18,050 youths of both sexes, putting the province close to the 18,830 target.
Of this number, provincial recruitment and mobilization delegate Agostinho Gabriel explained, 5,356 are young people born in 2003 who turn 18 this year, and 12,694 are those who, for various reasons, have not registered on previous occasions, but are not older than 35.
Of those registered, 9,579 are male, he said, noting that girls have registered a significant evolution in recent years, and that the province expects to reach its target this month.
Agostinho Gabriel said that the figures were updated every Friday and, judging by the way the process was going, the goal of 18,830 young people would likely be exceeded.
At the beginning of the campaign, he said, there was little participation at the registration posts, but the scenario had changed and each day numbers were rising in almost all districts.
The lifting of some Covid-19 restrictions, such as the resumption of classes, is one of the determining factors in the fulfilment of the plan, taking into account that most of the target group is attending secondary school.
The authorities are currently reinforcing the teams on the ground in order to guarantee the fulfilment of the planned goals for the present campaign.
Agostinho Gabriel asked all stakeholders, from community and religious leaders to teachers and parents and guardians, to urge young people aged 18 and over who have not yet registered to join the process, which ends on 30 March this year.
