Mozambique’s governing Frelimo party has welcomed the extension of the mandate of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) military mission in Cabo Delgado, which it said will “consolidate” the results achieved in the fight against insurgents.
“The Political Commission [of the party] welcomes the decision to extend the mandate of the military mission and believes that the measure will increasingly consolidate the achievements achieved in the fight against terrorist action”, refers in a note sent to the media.
The countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) approved, on the 17th of this month, the extension of the mandate of the organization’s military mission in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado [SAMIM] , during the 42nd ordinary summit of heads of state and government of SADC, which took place in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The communiqué issued at the end of the session does not indicate the deadline for the extension of this mission.
“The summit saluted the Personnel Contributing Countries (PCC) to SAMIM for their solidarity and sacrifice to support the mission and addressed condolences to the governments and families of the nine SAMIM personnel who lost their lives in the theatre of operations,” the note added. of the SADC, issued by the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For the Political Commission of the ruling party in Mozambique, the extension of SAMIM’s mandate will also consolidate the “gradual return of the population to the communities of origin” and the implementation of infrastructure reconstruction programs, as a result of the achievements that Mozambican forces have made. , SADC and also Rwanda have achieved.
“The Political Commission encourages the Government to continue with the work of raising awareness of individuals who for various reasons have joined terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado, to return to family life”, added in the note of the party that governs the country.
Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas, but has been terrorized since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.
There are 784,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and about 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registry project.
Since July 2021, an offensive by government troops with the support of Rwanda, which was later joined by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), allowed the recovery of areas where there was a presence of rebels, but their flight has led to new attacks in other areas. districts used as a passage or temporary refuge.
