According to figures calculated by Lusa from the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics the database, Mozambique’s exports to Portugal rose 106.4 percent between January and March this year from EUR5 to 10.3 million, while imports fell 30 percent, from EUR90 to 63 million.
Mozambique’s increase in exports to Portugal was surpassed only by the 132 percent rise in Guinea-Bissau’s sales, which were however of a lower total value.
Portugal’s trade balance with Mozambique remains positive while deteriorating EUR33.1 million in the first three months of the year to finish at EUR52.6 million.
Portugal’s exports to Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) fell 37 percent in the first quarter of this year, down from EUR725.8 million to 457.3 million, while imports of products from these countries rose 14.6 percent, an increase of EUR201 to 230 million.
In global trade, Portuguese exports decreased by 3.9 percent and imports fell 0.8 percent in March compared to the same month of 2015, and its trade deficit increased to EUR133 million.
According to the data on international trade in Portugal, in the accumulated in the first quarter of 2016, exports of goods decreased by 2.0 percent and imports grew by 1 percent year on year.
In March, Portuguese exports decreased by 1.3 percent and imports increased 2.8 percent excluding fuels and lubricants compared to the same month in 2015.
The Portuguese balance of trade deficit increased EUR133 million to March 2016, rising to EUR1,040 million excluding fuels and lubricants.
