Mozambique: Exports rise 80% in H1 – RM

The volume of exports from Mozambique registered an 80% growth in the first half of this year.
The increase in the volume of exports reflects the diversification and inclusion of production through the introduction of new commodities.
Of total exports, 98% went to Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, and 2% to the rest of the world. Power, heavy sands, aluminium, coal and agricultural products were most significant.
The figures were given to Radio Mozambique in the city of Blantyre, Malawi, by the National Director of Foreign Trade, Claire Zimba.
According to Zimba, Mozambique has an agenda committed to internationalisation, which includes adding value, substituting imports and promoting qualitative mobility of investments in industry, agriculture, tourism, mineral resources and infrastructure in logistics corridors, areas in which the country can best make progress.
Zimba said that, despite the growth in the volume of exports, Mozambique still needs to significantly reduce imports, as the trade deficit for the first half of this year stood above 50%.
