An explosive device was detonated on Avenida de Namaacha in the Matola A neighbourhood, in Matola, Maputo province, on Wednesday morning by sappers from the Boane Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique Sergeants School.
The grenade, whose provenance is still unknown, was discovered by a passer-by near the Casa Branca transport stop on Monday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Juarce Martins said that the sappers detonated the grenade at the location without causing any damage.
Residents however fear that there may be more explosive material in Matola A.
This is not the first time that grenades have been found in residential areas in Maputo province.
Recently, an individual in Mulotane, Boane district, found a grenade when excavating in preparation for a building project.
