Two people sustained severe injuries when an explosive device blew up on Sunday morning (09) in the administrative post of Matsinho, district of Vanduzi, central Mozambican province of Manica.
The victims have been identified as 22-year-old Samuel Mapulane and Joaquim Sozinho (37), both residents in Tambara district.
A source from the Mozambican Police (PRM) explained to AIM that the explosion occurred when the victims were on their way to the field carrying a hoe with a loose handle.
In an attempt to find something to fix it, they picked up what appeared be an ordinary piece of metal and hit the hoe when it exploded, causing severe injuries to the unfortunate pair.
According to the PRM one of the victims sustained injuries on his leg and hands while the other on his stomach and ribs. Both were immediately taken to the Provincial Hospital of Chimoio (HPC), where they are under medical care.
The police suspect that the piece of metal could be discarded or lost ordnance. Also, it could come up from a military training camp nearby, known as Polígono, close to the place where the incident occurred. The same area is also inhabited with agricultural fields.
The police force in Vanduzi and other relevant institutions are working to establish the causes behind the accident and device’s origin.
