Mozambique’s former President Joaquim Chissano on Wednesday said that the promotion of employment should be a priority for the government cycle that began on Wednesday with the inauguration of Filipe Nyusi as head of the state.
“Employment is a development issue, it is not something you buy at the store, you do it according to the development,” Joaquim Chissano told reporters on the sidelines of Filipe Nyusi’s inauguration ceremony.
Chissano, who headed the Mozambican state between 1986 and 2015, pointed out the need for the professional training for young people to be fit for the job market and self-employment.
“We have to teach young people to innovate and invent, including inventing what to do for their lives and their friends,” he added.
Agriculture is an area with great potential for youth employment and the country has made investments to capitalise on the sector, he said.
“The president has committed himself to renovate several irrigated lands, roads and bridges, expanding energy and creating banks. You have to use that,” he said.
Filipe Nyusi was sworn in on Wednesday in Maputo for the second and final term in the presidency, following his victory in the presidential elections on 15 October.
The presidential elections were held at the same time as the legislative and provincial elections, with the ruling Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) winning the ballot.
