The European Union and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have launched a four-year programme to bolster nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene services in central Mozambique.
Operations on the ground are to cover the six districts in Sofala province most affected by cyclone Idai in 2019: Dondo, Nhamatanda, Muanza, Búzi, Gorongosa and Chibabava.
“These districts have different levels of coverage of social services and of addressing malnutrition,” the organisations explained in a statement released on Wednesday, adding that the impact of the cyclone had created “more challenges” in overcoming malnutrition in children and to ensure their access to water and sanitation.
The EU is contributing a total of €14.7 million to the programme, complemented by €1.9 million from UNICEF.
The programme is expected to benefit around one million people living in the six districts, half of whom were directly affected by Idai, which claimed 604 lives.
The operations are to cover 173,000 children under five years of age.
