The European Union is to provide €6.7 million to the World Food Programme to boost the aid effort for people in Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, affected by armed conflict in the province, the WFP said on Friday.
“The humanitarian situation in northern Mozambique has pushed people to the limit,” said Antonella D’Aprile, the WFP’s representative in Mozambique, in a statement. “Those who manage to survive the attacks are forced to leave everything behind, including their livelihoods. The EU contribution will provide food aid for 360,000 displaced people, who the WFP said will benefit from a “food portion consisting of rice, grains and oil, covering 80 percent of their daily kilocalorie needs,” through vouchers with a value of 3,600 meticais (€47) to purchase food in local markets.
“The value vouchers provide immediate relief for families in difficulty, while positively impacting the local economy and increasing economic resilience,” the statement explains, adding that another part of the funding will be used to support other nutrition projects for minors in northern Mozambique.
