The European Union has made €300,000 available to to assist returning refugees and their host communities in Mozambique, according to the EU’s representation in Maputo.
Humanitarian funding will benefit over 42 000 people, including 11 500 returnees and over 30 000 people in the receiving communities in the Moatize district, in Tete Province, according to the statement.
The funds will go to actions implemented by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) that include food aid and the development of farm activities.
The measures will benefit Mozambican citizens who fled to Malawi due to political tensions between the government and the opposition, according to the statement.
With the peace process underway, the majority of refugees has returned to Mozambique, but there are “significant needs in the receiving communities in terms of food availability and employment as the returnees increased pressure on already strained resources, which could also potentially give rise to tensions in the affected areas,” the note points out.
