The European Commissioner for Energy said on Wednesday that the European Union (EU) is interested in helping Mozambique become a hub for the energy sector in southern Africa, with greater use being made of the country’s potential in this area.
Kadri Simson was speaking during the Mozambique – European Union Investment Forum – Creating Business Opportunities, which kicked off yesterday in Maputo.
She defended the existence of conditions for “transforming Mozambique into a regional energy production centre”, pointing to the enormous potential that the African country has in terms of energy generation sources, including renewable and sustainable ones.
Kadri Simson said that the EU has been investing in various incentives to attract the private sector to Mozambique, pointing out that the African country faces a deficit in the production and distribution of this resource.
“Mozambique has enormous potential, but half the population does not have access to sustainable, reliable and affordable energy,” she emphasised.
The European Commissioner for Energy said that it was “urgent to deepen cooperation” in order to face new challenges, such as the “unprecedented impact caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine”.
“Mozambique is an important long-standing partner of the European Union, we have strong ties, and we share common political and economic priorities,” she emphasised.
In the context of closer bilateral economic ties, Kadri Simson and Mozambique’s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Verónica Macamo, on Wednesday signed agreements that include the rehabilitation of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB), promotion of the blue economy, digitalisation and technical and professional training.
The prime minister of Mozambique, Adriano Maleiane, emphasised on the occasion that the country had potential that makes economic cooperation with the EU mutually advantageous.
“As far as energy is concerned, Mozambique has great potential in terms of renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources, with particular emphasis on projects linked to hydroelectric, wind, solar and natural gas production,” he said.
