Mozambique: EU channels €7.5 million euros for food support

The European Union (EU) has donated €7.5 million euros to the World Food Program (WFP) for communities facing food insecurity in central and northern Mozambique, according to a note released on Wednesday (26).

The WFP document states that aid will be provided to people affected by drought and floods in the centre of Mozambique, and by armed violence in Cabo Delgado province in the north.

“Almost a year after Mozambique was hit by two of the most powerful cyclones ever to hit Africa and with the increase in attacks on civilians by armed groups in the north, it is estimated that 1.9 million people in the country now suffer food insecurity,” the note reads.

The statement adds that, given Mozambique’s vulnerability to natural disasters, adverse impacts from climatic events are expected to increase in frequency and severity.

WFP will provide food directly and deliver money to buy food from retailers.

“This contribution will help to reduce acute food gaps in areas affected by disasters at the height of the scarcity season,” James Lattimer, WFP interim director in Mozambique, said.

“Given extensive crop losses and damage to livelihoods, many families will continue to need emergency humanitarian assistance until the main harvest begins in March 2020,” he added.
