Mozambique: Chapo calls for modernization of SERNIC
The European Union (EU) announced on Thursday that it will disburse the sum of 15 million euros to support the Southern African Development Community Military Mission to Mozambique (SAMIM) in the fight terrorism that has been plaguing the northern province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.
On Tuesday, terrorists launched an incursion in the northern province of Nampula, where they killed an Italian nun and set on fire a church and several houses in the district of Memba.
The sum will finance SAMIM’s non-lethal military component, such as field fortifications, storage containers, medical equipment, vehicles, and boats, among others.
This sum complements the 89 million euros granted to the Mozambican Armed Forces aimed at equipping the units that are being trained by the European Union Mission in the country.
The announcement was made by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, at a Maputo press conference shortly after the end of an audience granted by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.
“I spoke to President Nyusi about today’s decision for the provision of 15 million euros to support SAMIM. We will continue to support Mozambique in whatever way deemed necessary for the re-establishment of peace in the province of Cabo Delgado and we want, from now on, to express our solidarity”, he said, who on Thursday started a two day visit to Mozambique.
Borrell added that recent attacks reported in the northern province of Nampula are clear indication that the fight against terrorism is not over yet and must continue tirelessly in order to achieve lasting peace and development in the country.
“It is true that major steps have already been made in the fight against terrorism and that the government of Mozambique, with support from allied countries, has managed to control the situation in general terms but attacks continue and even in some places that until now had not been affected such as Nampula. Therefore, we need to work together, hand in hand, to restore peace”, he said.
Borrell took the opportunity to congratulate Nyusi for his leadership in the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process of the former guerrillas of Renamo, the largest opposition party in the country, and for Mozambique’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
In turn, the Mozambican Foreign Affairs Minister Veronica Macamo said that during the meeting Filipe Nyusi praised the role played by the European Union in the fight against terrorism in Mozambique embodied in the establishment of a military mission since November 2021, as well as humanitarian assistance provided to displaced people and support for reconstruction and development of Cabo Delgado.
“He also shared relevant information on the latest socio-economic political developments in Mozambique, particularly the process of preparing for the upcoming local elections”, she said.
Nyusi, she added, expressed his gratitude for the vote of European Union member countries in favor of Mozambique for non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
The President also explained to the High Representative Mozambique’s position for the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, saying that “we are not in favor of war, on the contrary we believe that both countries should embrace dialogue to end the conflict”, she noted.
“The EU’s commitment to Mozambique’s security is unwavering: we will continue training and equipping the armed forces to protect its population and ensure peace and stability in the country.” @JosepBorrellF#EUAU #EUDefencehttps://t.co/RUextsvSOt pic.twitter.com/rOdUlTtvR4
