The official signing of the “Empower to Employ” (“Capacitar para Empregar”) initiative in Maputo on Wednesday (19-06) marks a decisive step towards strengthening employment prospects for young Mozambicans.
Attended by European Union Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen and the German Ambassador to Mozambique, Ronald Münch, plus representatives of European Union (EU) member states in Mozambique and of the Government of Mozambique, the signing ceremony represented a joint commitment to sustainable development and economic empowerment in Mozambique.
The activities of the “Empower to Employ” initiative will focus on strengthening professional education, aligning training programs with market needs and fostering an environment conducive to the development of start-ups and small and medium-sized companies (SMEs).
This integrated approach aims to stimulate employment, especially among young Mozambicans, with the emphasis on sectors essential for the advancement of green initiatives.
With a budget of €9.35 million, “Empower to Employ” is co-financed by the EU and the Federal Government of Germany, and will be implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (German Agency for International Cooperation-GIZ).
The action is part of the Team Europe e-Youth Initiative and contributes to the Team Europe Green Deal Initiative in Mozambique, with the aim of empowering young people to lead the socio-economic and green transformation of Mozambique.
Around 80% of Mozambicans are under 35 years of age. The program is especially relevant in a context in which Mozambique faces the challenge of integrating this young population into the labour market.
