Twenty-nine Ethiopian nationals are being held in Tete for entering Mozambique illegally. They were intercepted by the authorities in Degue district, Cambane, after crossing the Zambezi River from neighbouring Malawi in a canoe, allegedly on their way to South Africa.
Those detained failed to present any identification documents.
Amélia Direito, spokesman for the Provincial Directorate of Migration in Tete, said that the detention of the Ethiopians arose thanks to tip-offs by the local population.
This is the second time in less than a week that authorities in Tete have apprehended illegal immigrants.
Migration authorities in Tete province say that liaison with neighbouring countries such as Malawi, Zambia and South Africa is underway with a view to stopping people moving between territories without complying with the regulations in force.
