The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) remain active on the ground to recapture the inmates who escaped on Wednesday afternoon from the Maputo Penitentiary Facility, formerly the Machava Central Prison, in the municipality of Matola. At the same time, Orlando Mudumane, spokesperson for the PRM General Command, contacted yesterday by “Notícias,” appealed to the public for cooperation in identifying the fugitives, some of whom are classified as dangerous due to their criminal profiles.
Mudumane’s appeal is based on the assumption that the fugitives may be hiding within communities in the city and province of Maputo, possibly aided by individuals who knowingly or unknowingly provided them shelter. The spokesperson further emphasized that the continued absence of these individuals from the prison could lead to an increase in criminal activity in the cities of Maputo, Matola, and beyond. These individuals were convicted for various offenses, including terrorism, kidnappings, car theft, armed robbery, voluntary manslaughter, and sexual assault.
It is worth noting that, out of the 1,534 inmates who escaped from the penitentiary, at least 150 had been recaptured and returned to their cells by the evening of December 25, the day of the incident.
As explained on Wednesday night by PRM General Commander Bernardino Rafael, at least 33 individuals, mostly inmates, were fatally shot during the confusion that occurred during the escape.
