Since 10 November 2025, coordinated attacks by Non-State Armed Groups (NSAG) have intensified in Memba and Erati districts, in Nampula Province.
The violence has caused civilians deaths, injuries, and kidnappings. Homes have been burned, properties looted, and public infrastructure destroyed, including a school. The deteriorating security situation has triggered the displacement of an estimated 128,000 people, mainly from Lúrio and Mazula, fleeing into nearby bushes, other districts, or into Cabo Delgado Province. This comes in addition to the 37,377 people displaced in October.
Classes have been suspended in 33 schools across both districts, leaving over 18,700 students and 160 teachers out of school.
Communities in Nampula are still recovering from three cyclones with the new cyclonic season approaching and a cholera outbreak is ongoing with 292 cases reported since September.
The UN and NGO-led rapid response capacities, the latter funded by DG ECHO, are ready to be mobilised, however, access to the area is currently limited for partners.
