Between 26 August and 24 September, Cabo Delgado province has experienced a sharp rise in non-state armed group violent episodes, heavily affecting civilians in Ancuabe, Balama, Macomia, and Mocímboa da Praia. 519 attacks have been recorded since January 2025, the highest number since the conflict began. Incidents include abductions, looting and killings.
Over 20 000 people were displaced, including some 10 000 children. These movements add to the 57 000 people already displaced by attacks between late July and early August.
Child protection risks are escalating, with many unaccompanied children lacking birth registration, restricting access to services and increasing exposure to harm. Reports also cite child killings and maiming due to improvised explosive devices, as well as growing child marriage risks in displacement settings.
Growing insecurity has also disrupted humanitarian operations, causing temporary aid suspensions in several areas.
Partners are assisting displaced populations in Mueda, Muidumbe, Ancuabe, Balama, and Montepuez through the NGO-led rapid response mechanism supported by DG ECHO, but others remain without support due to limited resources.
