The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said in Maputo this Tuesday that the resolution of major environmental problems is centred on three levels, namely in urban centres, rural areas and the marine and coastal environment, Radio Mozambique reports.
In urban centres such as the cities of Beira, Quelimane, Nacala and Xai-Xai, environmental education focuses on combating coastal erosion.
In rural areas, major challenges include combating poaching, rampant mining and unsustainable deforestation, especially in conservation areas.
In the case of the marine and coastal environment, the head of state said that conservation is one of the country’s major focal points.
Nyusi further stressed that 26% of national territory is covered by conservation areas, with emphasis on the national parks of Gorongosa, Banhine, Quirimbas, Limpopo , Zinave, Bazaruto and Maputo and the Gilé and Mágoe reserves.
The President was speaking at the opening of the VII CPLP International Congress on Environmental Education which aims to promote scientific exchange, cooperation opportunities and sharing of pedagogical experiences among the Portuguese-speaking member countries.
The head of state stated that great commitment was needed at the level of political leaders in environmental education.
Environmental policies in Mozambique are in line with international conventions and with so-called indigenous knowledge.
The President of the Republic expressed concern about the non-compliance with the agreements reached, above all by the industrialised countries that are the main causes of climate change.
The event will take place under four thematic axes, namely, Environmental Education in Development Policies, Environmental Education in the Educational System and Construction of Environmental Citizenship, Environmental Education as a Response to the Challenges Imposed by the Climate Crisis and Environmental Education as a Contribution to the Great Development Projects.
