The Mozambican president announced yesterday an agreement with Italian energy group Eni to build a 75 MegaWatt (MW) thermal power plant in the south of the country, an investment of US$130 million.
“I emphasize Eni’s commitment to the sustainable development of Mozambique, expressed not only in the exploitation of natural gas, but also in the promotion of energy infrastructure that directly impacts the lives of Mozambicans,” said Daniel Chapo.
The announcement was made at the signing ceremony of the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the new Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform, operated by an Eni-led consortium. The event was attended by the President, who sat alongside Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi, with whom he had met earlier in the day.
President Daniel Chapo announced Eni’s commitment “to build, starting now, a 75 MW gas-fired thermal power plant,” valued at approximately US$130 million. The project will be implemented by the state-owned utility, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).
“This plant will be built in Temane, in Inhambane province, where we are currently working on the 450 MW plant,” Chapo said. “We will have an additional 75 MW through Eni,” he added.
“This project will strengthen national power generation capacity, contribute to energy security, and boost our economy,” emphasized Chapo.
The partners in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin – Eni (50%), China National Petroleum Company (20%), Korea Gas Corporation (10%), Mozambican state-owned national oil company ENH (10%) and ADNOC’s subsidiary XRG (10%) – yesterday signed the FID for the new $7.2 billion floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) platform, which will double Mozambique’s LNG production to seven million tonnes per year (mtpa) from 2028 onwards.
In revenues for the State alone, the Coral Norte floating platform will generate US$23 billion over 30 years, which will add to the US$16 billion generated over the same period by Coral Sul, an identical platform operated by Eni since 2022
“Another sign of Eni’s commitment to the future of our country is the investment in the development of the biofuel production chain, through the promotion of agricultural production. This project will have a profound social impact in Mozambique, generating jobs and income for thousands of rural families that will be part of the supply chain,” acknowledged Daniel Chapo.
These projects, Chapo admitted, could generate 100,000 jobs in Mozambique.
Chapo also stated that he is “convinced” that this is an “effort that will contribute to diversifying Mozambique’s energy matrix,” as well as “strengthening” agriculture and “creating new economic opportunities” for local communities.
“Today we celebrate, but we also commit, as a government, to responsible management; to creating opportunities for all Mozambicans; to environmental sustainability, which is the commitment of the Mozambican government; and to defending the national interest, which is the interest of the Mozambican people,” concluded the head of state.
