Engineering students at Eduardo Mondlane University were out on Wednesday evening demonstrating for a reduction in tuition for the second half of 2020 from 25,000 meticais to 5,000 meticais.
Waving posters and shouting slogans, the UEM students claim to have been wronged by the faculty since, in that period of time, they had classes for only four weeks.
“We want them to reduce the tuition and [also want] exemption from fines. In the same way that some employees lost their jobs, we, too, no longer have the same capacity to pay the monthly fees, so we are demanding justice,” one student explained.
The arrival of ‘O País’ reporting team seemed to agitate the students even more, and journalists were not allowed access to the Faculty of Engineering. But the students were fearless in conveying their concerns to the press, in the hope of seeing their problems resolved.
“How can we study one month and pay for five months? That is what we don’t understand. Let them at least explain to us the reason for this,” another protester said.
Protesters say they have already tried to resolve the problem peacefully with the Faculty board, but without success.
‘O País’ tried but failed to get a reaction from the Faculty of Engineering.
