Eleven health professionals in Nampula have the coronavirus, and the province has two people hospitalized with Covid-19. Mozambique’s health minister, Armindo Tiago, says that the rapid rise in cases of the disease in that part of the country was predictable.
Confirmed data yesterday show that Nampula had the second-highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, as well as the highest number of infected health professionals (11). Two people are hospitalised in an isolation centre
The minister of health was concerned at some of the social behaviours he had seen, leading him to conclude that Nampula could be expected to register a rampant rise in Covid-19 cases.
Nampula has a coronavirus case in Mogovolas district, beyond the city, as is also true of Cabo Delgado, where Palma and the city of Pemba have positive cases. Armindo Tiago however still maintains that the country is not yet in the stage of ‘community transmission’.
Starting next week, Nampula will be performing serological testing with rapid tests on health professionals, in markets and in private sector companies, and, in the second half of the month, the province will start carrying out testing and diagnosis through PCR [ polymerase chain reaction].
According to World Health Organization projections, the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in Mozambique could occur in mid-June.
