A herd of 40 elephants is wreaking havoc in Marrupa district, Niassa province.
In the last few days, the pachyderms have destroyed 27 hectares of crops in Marangira and Marrupa-sede administrative posts.
Director of District Services for Economic Activities in Marrupa, Raju Momade, told Radio Mozambique that the region had reported 37 cases of human-wildlife conflict since March.
Momade said that the management of the Niassa Special Reserve had provided 50 ‘crackers’ which had been distributed to communities to scare the animals away, and that natural resources inspection and protection teams had been engaged.
Marrupa is one of eight districts covered by the Niassa Special Reserve.
