Elephants are back and sowing panic in Boane, Maputo province, where ten elephants were seen this weekend in the Filipe Samuel Magaia neighbourhood near the district headquarters village.
Elephants have become a familiar sight in the district of Boane during the drought, to the great consternation of the residents there, since the pachyderms’ incursions routinely devastate extensive areas of cassava and banana cultivation.
The secretary of the Filipe Samuel Magaia neighbourhood, Leda Matola, describes the havoc wrought by the giant animals last Tuesday night.
“They entered the machambas, and ruined them. One machamba no longer has any cassava at all. At the other, there was a wire mesh fence, which they simply destroyed,” she recounted.
Although the origin of the animals has not yet been ascertained for sure, some are putting it about that they hail from neighbouring South Africa’s Kruger Park.
