Elephants are devastating agricultural land in Macossa district, Manica province, an area already struggling with irregular rainfall due to the influence of El Niño.
Farmers in the region are concerned, and are asking for help from the authorities, who say they are already aware of the situation.
Director of District Economic Activities Services (SDAE) in Macossa, Castigo Bofana, describes it as a “recurrent situation in the district”, which he attributes to the “district’s proximity to the coutadas (hunting blocks)”.
The solution, Bofana says, is to seal off the coutadas to protect not only the population, but also the agricultural fields, with efforts being underway to secure financing.
The elephants’ raids, associated with the lack of rain, could leave some families without food, Macossa farmers say.
Pedro Maqui, a farmer from the village of Hombechawa, said that the pachyderms were ruining peanut and corn crops, frustrating his hopes of securing adequate supplies of food, and with the region still facing a lack of rain.
