Herds of elephants and buffaloes from the Gorongosa National Park are again sparking panic in Nhamatanda district, Sofala province, devastating crops in Lamego, Metuchira and Bebedo.
The total area of crops devastated by wild animals has yet to be determined, but it is known that almost 15,000 families are affected, says Nhamatanda administrator Adão Ossumane.
Quoted by Radio Mozambique, Ossumane explained that this week’s incidents came at a time when human-wildlife conflict in the district was actually on the decrease.
Meanwhile, in the communities located near the conservation area, the local government and the Gorongosa National Park have set up committees tasked with scaring away the animals.
